Après avoir validé à Bordeaux un cursus d'ingénieur à l'Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Cognitique, où il a pu s'initier aux sciences cognitives, Matthieu s'est dirigé vers la recherche, à travers notamment le Dual Masters in Brain and Mind Sciences qui lui a permis d'étudier au University College London, l'Université Pierre et Marie Curie et l'Ecole Normale Supérieure de Paris . Ce programme multidisciplinaire l'a introduit entre autres à la psychologie du raisonnement, domaine incluant les théories des processus duaux et les biais cognitifs qui l'intéressent aujourd'hui.
Il a effectué son doctorat au LaPsyDÉ sous la direction de Wim De Neys. Ses travaux de recherche portent sur les intuitions logiques au cours du raisonnement.
